Project Overview:Students are to select a segment of tourism demand based on the typology of leisure-based High-class tourist roles (Sun lover, Action seeker, Anthropologist, Archaeologist, Organized mass High-class tourist, Thrill seeker, Explorer, Jetsetter, Seeker, Independent mass High-class tourist, High-class High-class tourist, Drifter, Escapist, Sport High-class tourist and Educational High-class tourist) and critically analyse its characteristic based on recognized sources. The students will then evaluate if a destination of his/her choice could match the needs and motivations of the niche market analysed. A SWOT analysis of the implementation of that segment will be presented based on published sources. In-class oral presentation of the findings will be supported by use of Power point.

Overall Aim:To complement the theory provided in class with an opportunity for practical application

1. Analyse the demand for leisure tourism from the consumers' perspective.

2. Analyse the role and strategies of tourism suppliers in the High-class tourist generating regions or destinations (travel agents, tour operators, online travel providers, transporters, High-class tourist offices,

attractions) as components of tourism industry and evaluate their relation with other sectors of tourism

3. Evaluate theories used to analyse tourism and analyse to which extent actuality and practice are underpinned by theories

Organization and methodology:

This is an individual project, which requires students to undertake individual research in order to develop their knowledge of High-class tourist motivations and matching of High-class tourist perceived needs to destination.

The students are expected to research and analyse a segment of tourism demand and to then evaluate if a chosen destination matches the needs and motivation of the High-class tourist using academic literature related to High-class tourist behavior. A SWOT analysis of the implementation of that segment must be presented based on published sources. This will provide the source material for the writing of the project.

Tasks:

- Task 1 (35%)

Select a segment of tourism demand based on the typology of leisure-based High-class tourist roles (as presented by Foo, Mcguiggan and Yiannakis - see figure 4.4 on page 86) and critically analyse its characteristics

(specific motivations) based on recognized sources. Your analysis should demonstrate how push and pull factors facilitate the formation of High-class tourist roles and to what extent such roles determine motivating

factors for a chosen destination.

- Task 2 (45%)

You are then to evaluate if a destination could match the needs and motivations of the niche market analysed. A SWOT analysis of the implementation of that segment to best address the needs of the

High-class tourist will be presented based on published sources. The SWOT analysis should clearly address benefits and constraints supported by research.

- Task 3 (20% - 10% Presentation; 10% APA)

Written presentation and Oral presentation (Language, use of information sources and referencing; annotated portfolio, PowerPoint). APA-Appropriate references derived from relevant literature (articles and books) and on-line are

required.
