In one episode of the TV series The Big Bang Theory, someone ruins the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark by pointing out that the character of Dr. Indiana Jones is irrelevant to the actual story: • The amulet that reveals the resting place of the Ark would still be taken by the Nazis without Dr. Jones being around, • the diggers would still have found the Ark without Dr. Jones, once they had the amulet, • and all the Nazis still would’ve had their faces melted when they opened the Ark, with or without Dr. Jones being present. In a similar vein, some historians make the argument that Abraham Lincoln is not critical to the Civil War and its outcome: the war happens anyway, even if Lincoln had never been born, and the North still would have won if someone other than Lincoln becomes president in 1860. Is this true? Attack or defend that argument, citing specific details to make your case.
