Leadership, for me, can be summed up in one word – presence. It is your presence felt, your presence needed, and your presence feared upon. Even in physical absence, your authority is established and felt all over the workplace.
A true leader introduces ideas, values, and rules that are revered and followed by subordinates. Once the leader turns his/her back, people still follow because they trust in his/her credibility. Also, a leader’s presence instills fear among the people – not fear in its negative sense but good fear in which people are driven to excel in everything.
True leadership also affects change. The workplace improves because the management is firm and competent. Trust is founded among colleagues, authenticity and honesty are prioritized, and work output is at its best all because of effective leadership.
Lastly, a leader can be regarded as true and effective not because he/she produced numerous followers but because that person created more leaders. It’s not mainly how we shape a person’s ability to follow, but the main point of being a leader is to see and bring out the ‘leader’ in each person and maximize his/her potential.
