. The essay should demonstrate skills of visual analysis and historical research. After each question are a list of recommended texts, there are also important and relevant readings in your course reader. The essay is due on 30th April is to be 2,500 words in length
There are many topics to choose from.
1. Consider the choice of Gothic-Revival architecture for Sydney University’s Great Hall and quadrangle, and for Britain’s Houses of parliament. How do these architectural choices engage with tradition to demonstrate ideas of nationhood and/or cultural allegiances to Empire. (include in your analysis some examples of interior decoration such as stained glass windows, murals etc).
3. The republican ideals of ancient Rome were resurrected in the eighteenth century in support of the French Revolution. Discuss the visual expression of these ideals in France using at least three examples of neoclassical imagery (select examples of painting, and/or sculpture, and/or architecture) to make your argument.
