How to Care for Your Older Dog
You and your dog have had a number of years together, and you’ve noticed lately that he just doesn’t move as quickly as he used to, or his eyes are starting to cloud over a bit. Like all of us, aging happens to our pets. But take heart - there are some things you can do to help your canine buddy.
First, don’t panic. Everyone ages as a part of life. Your dog’s muzzle may get more flannel looking as the grey fur comes in, and it may be harder for him to get up and run to the door to greet you. Sometimes dogs also start to forget things you have taught them, or they sit and look off into space.
Animals can’t tell us when they hurt, and the aches that come with the arthritis of aging can make your dog a bit crankier or even snappish. If you notice a dramatic change in behaviour, however, it might be time to call the vet and schedule an appointment to rule out anything more serious, but many times, a change in diet can be of tremendous help when it comes to making your senior dog feel better.
Softer toys can be more appealing, too, to go with a softer bed with lower sides that is easier to get into and back out of.
