create a diagram that clearly identifies the character components in your first and last name according to the specifications provided below. Create the diagram in Adobe Illustrator and save the file as a PDF document Review the reading assignment and lecture related to the anatomy of type. Download and review the Quick Look Typography Guide . For this assignment you are to demonstrate your knowledge of type anatomy by creating a diagram. Create a new letter sized (8.5x11) document in Adobe Illustrator featuring a landscape orientation. Select command/control R to show rulers (if they are not visible) and right click on each ruler to be sure “inches” is selected as the unit of measurement. Drag a horizontal guideline down to 5 inches on the vertical ruler. This line will indicate the position of the baseline in the diagram. Next drag a vertical guideline out to 5.5 inches on the horizontal ruler. Select the Type tool and click on the point where the two guidelines intersect. Type your first and last name. Select the text and choose a centered alignment and set the point size to 72. If necessary, reposition the text so the bottoms of the characters rest on the horizontal guideline. Select your first name and choose one of the following classic serif typefaces for the font: Souvenir, Caslon, Bembo, Goudy Old Style, Garamond, Palatino, Baskerville, Cheltenham or Bodoni. Select your last name and choose one of the following classic sans serif typefaces for the font: Univers, Helvetica, Futura, Eurostyle, Gill Sans, Franklin Gothic, Arial, Optima or Century Gothic. Drag a horizontal guideline down to align with the tops of the lowercase characters in your first name. This guideline will indicate the position of the mean line in the diagram. Next drag a horizontal guideline down to align with the top of the uppercase character in your first name. This line will indicate the position of the cap height line. Drag a horizontal guideline down to align with the top of the ascenders in your first name. (If you do not have a character with an ascender in your first name, temporarily add a lowercase “h” to your name to determine the position of the line. Be sure the “h” is set in the same typeface as your first name and delete it once you have positioned the guideline.) This guideline will determine the position of the ascender line. Note, depending on the design of the typeface you have selected for your first name, the ascender line may be above, below or in the same position as the cap line. Finally, drag a horizontal guideline down to align with the bottom of the descenders in your first name. (If you do not have a charcter with a descender in your first name, temporarily add a lowercase “p” to determine the position of the guideline.) This guideline will determine the position of the descender line. Next drag a vertical guideline out to a position approximately a 3/8 of an inch to the left of the first letter in your first name. Drag another vertical guideline out to a position approximately 3/8 of an inch to the right of last character in your last name. Draw the ascender, cap height, mean, base and descender lines with the pen or line tool. Use the vertical and horizontal guidelines as guides. The vertical guideline on the left marks the beginning of each line and the vertical guideline on the right marks the end. Set the stroke weight for the drawn lines at .75 points and select cyan as the color for the stroke. Select all of the drawn lines (but not the text) and select Object > Arrange > Send to Back. Then select Object > Lock > Selection. (Once you have locked the position of the drawn lines, you may wish to hide the guides to better see the lines you have drawn.)
