I run a small book publishing company, but managing everything off a spreadsheet has become unwieldy. I tried learning Access 2010, but I quickly got bogged down and confused. So now I'm stuck running things off a spreadsheet and a database. It takes a week every time I have to figure quarterly taxes or royalties. I need help.
The database you create must:
• Split out payments for orders and purchase orders to apply the correct amount of profit to each book ordered
• Track sales of each title by number of units sold
• Track sales of each title by profit
• Track expenses for each order
• Track progress of a title toward breakeven vis-à-vis development costs
• Track each title’s development costs
• Track each title’s publishing information
• Track royalties already paid
• Track and figure royalties owed (by title, by author, by quarter, and by year)
• Track purchase orders coming in
• Track purchase orders fulfillment costs
• Track purchase orders payments received
• Track purchase orders profits (total and by book and author)
• Track expenses across all categories
• Track payments and income from all channels
• Give me taxes owed at the click of a button (for quarter and year and sales tax)
• Track customers, including total purchase history
• Generate custom e-mail lists/reports from customers
• Separate when sales happened from when those sales were paid for
• List and track authors
• Track author sales expenses
• Track author sales income (and be sure those profits don’t figure into royalties)
• Track PayPal fees
• Generate invoices that can be sent to bookstore and library customers
• Import reports from Paypal
• Import reports from Snowfall Press (printer)
• Import reports from LightningSource (printer)
• Import reports from Kindle/Amazon
• Import reports from Sony/Nook
• Import reports from Kobo
• Connect payments for Amazon/LSI with breakdown of Amazon/LSI sales from months earlier
• Generate taxes owed at the press of a button
• Generate royalties owed at the press of a button
