Objective: Learn to apply structured business analysis tools and techniques to analyse business problem. In the early phase of the project (Analysis) you will review the current operation of Student Administration System of Waverley University and create a set of diagrams that will assist the developers with the next stage of the project that is outside the scope of this task (Design).

Case Study

You have been hired by a Melbourne based Software Company to develop a new student administration system for Waverley University in Melbourne. The system will be used by students, administrative and academic staff. The new system is expected to accomplish the essential operations and process the important information as follows:

Each student in Waverley University needs to complete an online form for enrolment purpose. During the enrolment process students need to provide their personal information includes name, age address, contact number. They are also asked for additional information for their course of study (e.g. degree) and the units they have chosen. For local students, they can select to enroll as either full‐time or part‐time. For international students, they are allowed to study full‐time. There are two semester every year in Waverley University. A full‐time student must take no less than 3 units per semester; while a part‐time student has no such requirement. A student can choose 2nd year units only if he/she has successfully completed at least 6 first year units and the same rule applies when a student choose 3rd year units. The enrolment needs to be approved by the enrolment officer. Completed enrolment forms are store in a student database. After the enrolment is approved by the enrolment officer, the student pays the tuition fee through the Finance Department of the School.

At the end of each semester, academic staff complete the students result sheet and pass it to administrative staff whose job is to upload the results into the system. To reduce the workload of administrative staff, the principal requires that the new system should allow academic staff to upload student results directly into the system.

Once all results for the semester are completed the system should produce an academic report for each student. If a student has completed all the required credit points and units for their course of study, the system should generate a completion report which administrative staff uses to determine whether a student is allowed to graduate. If they are, the system is updated and a graduation report will be generated and be sent to the student.

If a student failed a subject twice, a warning message will be generated and a letter is sent to the student. If a student failed a subject a third time, an exclusion letter will be generated and be sent to the Associate Dean of Teaching for signature. COM 102 – Assignment – Trimester 2, 2013 1

An award generation system is also needed. If a student obtained higher distinctions consistently for all their units, a Pro‐VC award will be generated by the system. Such awards are signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University and then sent to the student.
