The Rancher’s Life
By Ali VanHouten
Imagine living on a ranch and being able to enjoy the great outdoors every day of your life! You get up in the morning and see that large orange sun rising and in the evening see the beautiful pink, lavender and blue sunsets. Just breathe in that nice fresh outdoor air. Sometimes there is complete silence and sometimes the sounds of weanling calves bawling for their mothers is deafening. At night you may hear the cheerful call of coyote pups or gentle munching of the horses as they eat their dinner.
The life of a rancher is physically and emotionally demanding but it is also very satisfying. The duties and responsibilities are varied, demand physical labor, and an education in running a business. The hours aren't the same every day and can be dictated by everything from your livestock, the weather, equipment, and even your ranch hands. A rancher must be prepared for any situations when running a successful ranch. Some of the duties of a rancher might include hiring ranch hands, shoeing horses, administering medicine to a sick animal, moving hay, mending fence, or training a horse just to name a few. The life of a rancher is filed with hard work, but the rewards far outweigh the demands of ranch life.
The life of a rancher requires great independence and determination. Most large ranches are located in remote areas of the country. Being prepared to do everything by yourself is a good frame of mind to have. Hiring ranch hands that have skills that you don't would be a smart move as well. A love for the great outdoors is almost a must if you want to be a rancher. Most of your time will be spent outside, so if you don't love the outdoors, you may want to consider another dream job. Most small ranches have a difficult time, but there are several ranchers who are retiring and they will need replaced. A shortage of hard working, outdoor loving people put the ranching lifestyle in danger of becoming truly a thing of the past.
Ranches are great places to raise a family. That hasn't changed over the years. You have a great opportunity to teach kids responsibilities such as raising their own animals and doing chores. Modern technology has made it possible for families to have more leisure time. Today the equipment is so much larger and the improved technology allows families to get the work done much faster. The life of a rancher is a physically and emotionally demanding one, but the satisfaction received from working the land is immeasurable. Cattle ranching still is and I predict it always will be one of the most dreamed about ways of life.
The open range, horses, and barbed wire fencing brings to mind vibrant images of the West. Freely roaming mustangs and herds of buffalo aren't really seen or heard of much anymore. However, there are still hard-working people making a life as a rancher. The always changing economy provides a bit of a challenge for the life of a rancher, but these men and women are still making a real living doing something they love.
