If you use BTs, IGBTs or FETs as power switches, they are going to work for kW of less than 100kW. For >100kW or for high power applications you use Thyristors. And if the thyristors are to be used, quenching circuits are needed to turn off the thyristors. There is a mechanism of how this is done to turn it off.
