I'm doing product design, industrial design, reverse engineering, ideation, etc. I have over 15 years experience working on various systems/devices across multiple industries, from concept to launch. 1 - i've make myself a rough idea about the device you need, but will be more useful if you may send over some drawings, sketches... (just to be sure we are on the same page:) ) 2 - the design (for the same device/system) could vary due to different factors - designer, experience, knowledge, etc 3 - working with glass fibers is a bit tricky as they are prone to crack if not respected the bending radius, need to have the tensile force properly set, etc, etc 4 - is quite difficult to advance a proposal if i don't know exactly what is about :( Regards Bogdan

You would probably want a stepper motor rather than a servo motor. Connect it to a controller to set the speed. Rods radius can be used to calculate the draw rate

Hi. Interesting project. I would like to help you design that gift for your daughter. Yes, it can be done with a small step motor (in case the fibers are light) and by means of an arduino board the speed could be controlled and adjusted by a potentiometer. The assembly of the electrical part is very simple using arduino modules, with a connection diagram you could easily assemble all the parts. I would like to know the amount of fiber that will be collected on a reel (approximate length), this for the calculation of the size of the reel. Need to purchase micro-controller kit, servo motor and rotary encoder. Program the controller to set servo speed as per rotary encoder turns.
