I own a small restaurant, and have created a Filemaker database that could use a little tweaking that is outside my skillset. I made this database to allow us to calculate the food cost margin on all our menu items.
The challenges that led to this were:
1) Food input costs are always changing, so if tomatoes go up 30% in price, I need to calculate how that cost of BASE INGREDIENTS ripples into all our menu item costs
2) We often ‘make’ a secondary ingredient in-house (say salad dressing) that then gets used in menu items (salads), so I needed to create a ’SECONDARY INGREDIENT) category that then can be costed out in a basic unit (say ml) and then used in primary menu items
3) We sometimes use the ’secondary ingredients’ (say the salad dressing above) in creating a third level of ingredients (say chicken based in the salad dressing that is it’s self a secondary ingredient), so I needed to create a TERTIARY INGREDIENT that is composed of base and secondary ingredients and can be used in constructing individual item recipes.
You will see this in the forms for
SECONDARY INGREDIENT, and
which then can all be called upon to form
This all seems to work great. The thing I need help with, is at this point the list of BASE INGREDIENTS is getting really long, and the drop-down menu when you are creating MENU ITEMS is too big and imposing. However I created a ’Type of Ingredient’ classification that corresponds to the base ingredients (one base ingredient could have one (such as milk which is ‘Dairy’) or many ’Type of Ingredient’ classifications (such as ‘Butter Packets’ that can be the following Types: Dairy, Condiment, or Seasoning).
What I would like to do, is on the portals for selecting the BASE INGREDIENTS when constructing MENU ITEMS’ or SECONDARY INGREDIENTS or TERTIARY INGREDIENTS have the first drop down menu allow you to select INGREDIENT TYPE first which then limits the selection of BASE INGREDIENTS that show up in the BASE INGREDIENT drop down menu by this selection… so for instance if I choose ‘DAIRY’ first as an INGREDIENT TYPE, the BASE INGREDIENT drop down menu to the right of it will only show ‘DAIRY’ products when it is activated.
Does that make sense? The current version of the database is attached to this project request. Can you give me a cost to do this work?
