A customer of mine offers free podcasts. To reduce server traffic all audio files are hosted externally. The audio host offers its own player and javacript library for this purpose. Several audios on the same page increase load time dramatically. User experience is very bad. See this page for example:

It's the same with Youtube. This is why I use a script that loads the YT clip after the thumbnail is clicked. I can now put dozens of clips on the same page with no negative effect. See this example with 16 videos. Load time is around 1 second (from Germany where the server is):

I would need the same solution for the audio player. The player can be implemented with javascript or with an iFrame.
Please see the attached file for further information. You will an example for each method.
For the user it should look like this: An image is loaded that looks like a player (doesn't really matter). After clicking this image, the player is loaded. An loading indicator would be fine, but is optional.
Notice that several of these players can be on one page. The script should handle this. Furthermore, I would prefer a solution that does not need any javascript in the HTML part. This is a WordPress site. While we can use raw javacript in an editor I would rather avoid that.
See the attached file for the the HTML pattern that is used your youtube videos. It does not contain any javascript but plain old HTML.
