Aim To design a low noise amplifier using an Infineon RF transistor BFP640. The amplifier is to be used to amplify the L1 GPS signal and so the centre frequency is 1575MHz and bandwidth 40MHz. The requirements are a noise figure of less than [url removed, login to view], a gain of 20dB ± [url removed, login to view] and S22 should be less than -15dB over the entire bandwidth. To help you with your design you may wish to use a circuit simulation CAD package. I have provided a set of bare schematics and display sheets for Agilent Technologies ADS which you may wish to use. The data sheet does provide the standard spice parameters, including parasitics should you wish to use a different simulation package. (Although you will not be penalised for using a different circuit simulation package, I strongly recommend you use ADS along with the schematics provided.) Assessment is in the form of a report and electronic design files. These should be submitted to the reception on floor 6 by the date and time given above.

## Deliverables

Design (50) A preliminary design with ideal resistors, inductors and capacitors, will get 25 Marks. If the design does not meet the specifications then one mark will be deducted following the scheme: 1. Gain: for each 0.1 dB below or above specification. 2. S(2,2): for each [url removed, login to view] above specification. 3. NF: for each [url removed, login to view] above the specification. A working design with real inductors, capacitors and resistors and other appropriate elements will be needed. The specification for the noise figure for "real" devices has been relaxed to a NF less than [url removed, login to view] I will check the amplifier specification at lower limit band mid-band and upper limit and Report The purpose of the report is to demonstrate how you choose the component values and bias points and to demonstrate the performance of your design. You must also include details of the simulator and any models used to simulate the circuit if different from ADS. Sufficient information should be given to uniquely identify the components and any model used to simulated parasitic effects. The report should also include graphs showing the gain in (dB) vs frequency and plots of the magnitude of S22 and noise figure. These graphs should be larger enough to CLEARLY show you have reached the goals specified above. These graphs will be used to assess whether the design reached the specifications and any lack of clarity will result in all marks for that section being deducted. If I simulate your circuit and the results differ you will be asked to demonstrate the simulation and if the results still differ the whole work submitted won't be counted an inclusion and discussion of other simulation results that demonstrates the performance of your circuit is higly important. Also clarity of the report. The report should present the results and choices in a clear and CONCISE manner. The maximum size of the report is 5 pages excluding title page.

## Platform

ADS is a RF systems and circuit simulator written by Agilent Technogies. It also allows the user to design the layout of the circuit and to perform electromagnetic simulation of planar structures. The licenses for the ADS design software were donated by Agilent Technologies. To help your design process and to minimise the learning curve of using ADS, I have provided a set of schematics that are held in a compressed ADS project called CA.zap.
