creating a website for user donation

I would like to create a website where users are able to donate his items to another users. It will involve a user data base creation, creating user profile and item profile page, and a backend system to run this website. Therefore this is a community type project where users are able to interact with each other, users can grow exponentially, and so do the items, therefore the site needs to be optimized for used in large scale.
I would like to use open source technology.
If you have experience in this type of community web site project, please let me know your relevant port folio, and your suggestion on how to build this website, and the language you would like to do this project with.
The website is a prototype and will not be launched therefore it does not need to be perfect by any means just functional without any bugs.
This is a test project, so what's important here is the functionality, and not how it looks, but how it works, therefore for this test project, it can be awarded to 2-3 developers for evaluation purpose. If this project moves forward, I will pick one developer who deliver the best performance as well as reasonable project cost and on time deliverable.
Therefore please let me know how many days needed to deliver this test project.
