to develop a 24 hour Internet media station for broadcasting conversation, music, news and video features
Technologies for audio and video streaming include open standards like RTP, RTCP and RTSP, proprietary technologies like MMS, RDT and even direct use of TCP. Client software to receive media broadcasts is widely available for free. Instances include Apple's Quicktime, Microsoft's Media Player, Real's RealPlayer and Adobe's Flash Player. Free server software to broadcast audio and video is available from sources like the MPEG4IP project and Apple's Darwin Streaming Server. APIs to develop streaming clients and servers are also available in Java like JMF and MMAPI. C# also supports a low level audio playing waveout API.
The proposal for this project is to identify and set up appropriate audio or video streaming technology suitable for an Internet media station and to collect, edit and deploy suitable programme content for such a station. Media content can be delivered in both on-demand unicasts and in scheduled shared multicasts. Audio or video sources can be files, streams captured live from microphones or video cameras and live republications of media content such as the news from other online radio or TV stations. Appropriate attention will need to be given to intellectual property rights issues and to economising on use of bandwidth by means like IP multicasting or use of MBONE.
