Fix WordPress rewrite rules for custom permalinks

I have created a plugin for each section of my website, so that I can have a page in admin to edit each section. There is a section called Portfolio that I access at the URL [url removed, login to view] For each item in the portfolio, the URL is [url removed, login to view] All of this is coded already and I works 100% correctly on my local Apache/PHP server, however when it's uploaded to my web server it does not work.
I am using add_rewrite_rule to create the rewrite. It is functioning correctly and I checked the .htaccess file and I can see the rewrite has been added. Here is how I create the rewrite:
add_rewrite_tag('%portfolio_item%','([^&]+)');
add_rewrite_rule('^portfolio/([^/]*)/?', '[url removed, login to view]$1', 'top');
In [url removed, login to view] I read the query string variable "portfolio_item" and query the database using the value of this variable. This works great on my local Apache/PHP server, but I have uploaded the code to both GoDaddy and 1and1 hosting services and it doesn't work on both. On the 1and1 web server I get the error "This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it? It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help." On the GoDaddy webserver I get the error "No input file specified."
I need somebody to fix this rewrite so that it works the same on my web server as it does on my local server. I will give FTP access to the GoDaddy server to the winning bidder.
IMPORTANT: I want to say again that this is already coded and it works 100% correctly on my LOCAL web server. When I upload it to be my GoDaddy server it does not work, so I need you to fix it on my web server.
