Instead of having these scripts, I suggest you install Nagios to a separate vps/vm to check this server. Soon you might need more servers to check and monitoring status ex. cpu, memory Let me know if you need help.

I suppose that on the server - the mail service is properly configured, and we can send out mail via the bash command - cron is installed and working properly - we will use bash scripts for all tasks Furthermore, I'd suggest to - split both tasks into two sub tasks: monitoring and weekly report. This would save some programming and unnecessary bug sources - provide me some information how the backup is done (ex.: tar/gz?) and how we can test for failure and generate weekly report (ex.: there are any logs we can evaluate, etc.) Would be pleased to do this project for you.
