Improve scoring of existing PHP search function

We have a PHP function that compares an input string with a list of strings in our database.
it can return 0, 1 or multiple results with an score. There can be a perfect match or a partial match in the results, reflected in the score.
We would like to improve that function. Previous experience in searching and scoring algorithms is required.
