THE SITE
This September we are launching a new website. The website is a wishlist facility combined with a really good search tool. So it acts as an effective shopping portal, with the added ability to save wishlists and share them online. As with Facebook, you create a short profile, and you can then add family and friends allowing them easy access to your wishlists.
The idea is that it makes the likes of Christmas shopping very easy. Rather than schlep up and down the high street for weeks on end, you spend a quiet hour on your laptop working your way through your family's wishlists, and buying all their Christmas presents online safe in the knowledge that you are buying them something they want.
The site will also offer some bespoke wishlists - Ready Made wishlists as we call them. These are targeted to specific events. We plan to launch with two, and increase the range over the forthcoming year. The two we will launch with are a New Baby List and a Wedding List.
The New Baby List is an exhaustive list of everything you might need or want when you're expecting your first baby. It's created for mums by mums, with every item ranked as either must-have or nice-to-have, together with advice from mums on what to consider when making their choices. Each item also comes with recommended options to suit a range of budgets and lifestyles. The user can then modify the list to suit themselves - deleting items they don't want, choosing from the recommended options, or adding their own.
The Wedding List is similar, but for obvious reasons, not quite as specific. This will be an exhaustive list of all the kinds of things people traditionally ask for - nice bed linen, picture frames, dining sets etc. The list will come with Style Files to inspire the user. Style Files will cover a range of tastes - for example contemporary, rustic etc. Each style file will be a collection of nice items that the user may want to add to their list, together with suggested stores to browse for items to suit their taste.
The website will launch in early September, to capitalise on this year's Christmas shopping spree. We have enlisted a PR agent who will be seeking to generate as much positive publicity as possible across national newspapers, magazines and websites.
KEY DESIGN TASKS
From the point of view of design, the key tasks are:
Site structure - how best to organise the various areas of the site
Layout - how best to arrange all the information on the page - for example, with the baby list, there's a lot of information to get across, how do we present it in the cleanest, simplest, most user friendly way
Usability - all good sites should obviously be easy to use, and ours needs to appeal to even the most technophobic mum!
Branding - creating a glossy, elegant, fresh site that will appeal to the user. The audience is likely have strong female skew, and the design needs to reflect this whilst being neutral enough not to discourage men - it can't be too girly!

THE TEAM
The website is being produced by an ex-BBC producer, and built by an ex-BBC technologist. Between us we have 19 years experience working in the BBC's Multiplatform area, creating content for web, TV and interactive TV. We are therefore extremely well versed in producing high quality, user-friendly work, and looking for a good designer to complete the team. The initial job is likely to involve about 4 weeks of design time, and there will be more work on offer over the following year as we continue to develop the site and add new features.
