USS Cole and USS Maine Parallels
Throughout history, most conflicts can be traced to an event of origin. One of the biggest precursors to a conflict in American history was the implosion of the USS Maine. To this day, the exact cause is unknown, but regardless, it sparked one of the United States’ biggest conflicts in history. Oddly enough, exactly one hundred and twelve years later, a similar event occurred in a Saudi harbor. The event happened to be the bombing of the USS Cole, a US Navy vessel just like the USS Maine in 1898. Despite the obvious parallels, the substantial difference between both events is that they had tremendously different outcomes in terms of foreign relations despite the similar circumstances.
On February 15th, 1898, a thundering roar of fire and smoke rocked the Havana Harbor in Cuba. Following the cacophony of flame and ash, all that remained was the wreckage of a once proud battleship: the USS Maine. The explosion of the Maine led to what essentially would become one of America’s most significant conquests over Spain, one of the world’s largest superpowers at the time.
