It is a short essay in economic development. Instructions: Compare and Contrast the development performance of two developing countries or regions over the past decade from: 1) the Orthodox perspective 2) the New Orthodox perspective For each perspective, your essay should: First briefly specify the different dimensions of concern to each perspective (eg. Orthodox economists are concerned with per capita income levels and growth, whether or not an industrial transformation is under way, etc. …). Specify relevant indicators you will use to assess performance for each of the dimensions and whether a higher (rising) or lower (falling) value of the indicator reflects better development (progress). Create a table (2) showing the indicator scores on the indicators reflecting each dimension in 2003 (or there about) and 2013 (roughly a decade later) and changes (or rate of change) over the period organized by dimension of concern for each country. Use the information in the table to compare and contrast development performance in the two developing countries or regions. Your essay should be roughly 2 double-spaced typed pages (12 point font, one inch margins) in length excluding the tables. Be sure to reference your data source(s) in a footnote at the bottom of the table(s) you create. There are a large number of data sources available online. Data are quite limited for some countries (typically very poor countries and countries engaged in civil strife) so before you select your countries (or regions), explore whether sufficient data is available. Data availability also tends to lag the current year by at least 2 years, so in 2016, the most recently available data will be for 2013 or 2014. Most of the data sets have a menu driven data access tool that lets you easily choose and download data for the countries/regions, indicators, and years of your choice. The data set can be accessed at: [login to view URL] United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Human Development Report Data: At the end of each year’s Human Development Report is a set of statistical tables that provide historical data on the Human Development Index and the most recent year’s data on a huge number of other indicators. If you go to the page where you access a particular year’s report ([login to view URL]), you will be able to download the statistical tables separately or as a part of the whole report. For example, for the 2015 report, you can go to the link above and just click on the report download button at the left to download the full report with statistical tables, or you can click on the link to the web version at the left and then the statistical tables link to just view the statistical tables.
