Hi, The backup script can be developed using both php as well as linux script. Both scripts can be scheduled using cron for automatic execution. So the choice is yours. I currently have a hosted mysql database with a cpanel interface. It actually has a setting I can show you that will automatically backup the mysql database for you on a daily basis. These files become available for you via ftp. Since it sounds like you are on a shared server they are really already backed up for you (if you have it set up for them to be created). If you want extra protection (I don't believe it is needed) I can create a script that uploads them to whenever you would like (e.g. Dropbox). I can also write a script that explicitly calls mysqldump although I do not think this will be necessary. And some hosted sites might replace access to mysqldump with their own backup service.
