Biggest reason to choose me: I have actually written multiple operating systems and kernels from scratch. We can do either totally custom or a fork of an existing Linux/Unix operating system. Custom would require a much longer time, however the results are well worth it for specialized tasks e.g. flight computers, guidance systems, etc. If we go full custom, the biggest issue by far is how you want your memory setup, linux uses a modified buddy system which is great for dynamic usage, but depending on your use it may not be the way to go. If you're just looking for a custom Linux based OS, the typical process is just to port it with a cross-compiler toolchain, a detailed guide on that can be found in a book called "Linux From Scratch", it's much simpler than writing a fully custom OS, the main issue people have with it is the compiling time. Firmware and things of that nature though, that almost always needs to be custom and some things especially networking is a project in it of itself. I can promise you a modern Linux based OS within 1 year along with firmware needed. I'll aim for six months, but that buffer is there in case of any wildcards you might throw my way. To make a fully custom OS, I'm sorry to say but you're not going to get anything as refined as Linux. It'll still be nice, but it won't be as polished. An x-server alone is a decade worth of work.
