I've taken a minute on your example verse, just to sort out rhythm and flow - the idea is good so you're in great shape. It's not exactly the format of a limerick, and I reckon you need to construct the last line(s) in each verse like below to keep it flowing, but this sort of verse construction can be repeated just the same as a limerick. In my opinion you're going the right way. I've just obviously expanded the original last line and it might not be exactly what you want, so that can always be messed about with a bit more, but hopefully it's a decent format. Some thought this day would never come, When Gems and I would become one, They said she never would comply, 'Til I got out the old hair dye, Well the grey's all gone, but I'm not dumb - at least I'm not under the thumb!
