Ojibwe Language Learning App Development

The Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute (KTEI) is sourcing the development a mobile-first cross platform webapp for Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe Language) to be used as a resource for parents of K-Grade 1 students in KTEI’s Anishinaabemowin immersion program. The app will consist of menus of individual words and phrases that are grouped together according to categories. From there, the user can click to hear the phrase spoken in Anishinaabemowin. The basic layout/functionality of the app has been identified and a simplified menu flowchart is attached. KTEI will provide the audio files of the spoken Anishinaabemowin words and phrases. These files will be named in both English and Anishinaabemowin for clarity, as well as to be used as a basis for labeling buttons in the app. Basic idea: - mobile-first cross platform webapp with potential to be made available offline (depending on total size of audio samples) - layout to consist of menus through which the user navigates to bring up categories of lists of individual words and phrases which she or he can click to hear the phrase spoken in Anishinaabemowin – basic layout diagram available on request o categories grouped mainly by activity/time of day and by type of speech o KTEI would provide recordings of the words/statements by category with both English and Anishinaabemowin translations in the filename Desired features: - “Favourites” feature – allows user to jump to their favourite/most used words and phrases at any time – these are selected by hitting “like” or heart button on any word or phrase - Search function in English (type-ahead style) – accessible from any screen, indicated by a magnifying glass icon - In addition to “Favourites” feature, user can arrange placement of buttons on any page, just as one arranges apps on their smartphone - Link to songs to listen to hosted on KTEI website - An administrative interface to allow the client to add or change app content (specifically more words and phrases) in the future A number of additional features are sought, time and budget permitting, such as but not limited to: - emojis section – list of popular emojis which user can click on to hear Anishinaabemowin word for each expression/ojbect/etc. - Language switch button on all pages – toggles between English and Anishinaabemowin displays at any time A successful engagement with the client will indicate from the outset which of the above features are attainable within a given timeframe and budget. The freelancer will be required to construct the app according to these specifications, with further discussion and negotiation regarding the desired additional features.
