Let say, whenever you update your application it's folder name in directory is changed from 09323D3F-D371-4556-ABA3-BD23AF487F12 to E771BBEC-ACC6-489C-B7C1-B5FF11004CB2/ NSHomeDirectory() is changing every time you update the app in real device. Hence you should never save the absolute url of the video/photo. Save the name of the video/photo and recreate the url every time you relaunch the app: NSString *documentsDirectory = @"MyFolder"; documentsDirectory = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:filename]; NSString *relativePath = documentsDirectory; Once you have fileURL look for the file and you will find the file in previous launch. Another way I suggest is Locating Files Using Bookmarks: If you want to save the location of a file persistently, use the bookmark capabilities of NSURL. A bookmark is an opaque data structure, enclosed in an NSData object, that describes the location of a file. Whereas path- and file reference URLs are potentially fragile between launches of your app, a bookmark can usually be used to re-create a URL to a file even in cases where the file was moved or renamed. Regarding retrieving old photos/videos whether it is possible or not, I think I should have to check you code base first.
